Building Resilience and Self-Reliance in South Sudan: CDI’s Food Security and Livelihoods Initiative
The Centre for Development Initiative (CDI) is driving a transformative effort to strengthen food security and livelihoods in Magwi County, Eastern Equatoria State through the Pathways to Self-Reliance Project. Funded by the Titi Foundation with a USD 45,067 grant for the 2025–2026 cycle, this initiative focuses on empowering IDPs, returnees, host communities, and refugees to rebuild their lives and achieve sustainable self-reliance.
As part of a seven-member Community Resilience Consortium (CRC) led by Titi Foundation, CDI is working alongside partners across Northern Bahr el Ghazal, Central Equatoria, Unity, Eastern Equatoria, and Jonglei States. The project aims to reach 70,000 direct and 150,000 indirect beneficiaries, prioritizing women (60%) to promote gender equity in development.
In Magwi, CDI’s activities are centered on practical and community-driven solutions — from distributing seeds and tools to farmer groups, refugees, returnees, and vulnerable households, to training farmers in climate-smart agriculture, pest management, and nursery establishment. The project also supports Survivor Community-Led Response (SCLR) initiatives, enabling local communities to design and lead their own solutions, while strengthening anticipatory early warning and response systems to mitigate the effects of climate and humanitarian shocks.
Through these efforts, CDI is not only helping families improve their food production and income but also fostering resilient, self-reliant communities across South Sudan — communities that can thrive even in the face of future challenges.
Women in Magwi receive seeds and tools to boost household food production and resilience.
Farmers receive hands-on training on nursery bed preparation under CDI’s Food Security and Livelihoods Program.
